Zoetrope: All-Story

Francis Ford Coppola founded Zoetrope: All-Story in 1997 as a quarterly publication of short stories and one-act plays. During the magazine’s second year, to manifest the collaborative nature of filmmaking, he introduced the concept of the guest designer, by which a different leading artist would design each edition in its entirety. Those guest designers have included Helmut Newton, Gus Van Sant, Zaha Hadid, David Bowie, Julian Schnabel, William Eggleston, Laurie Anderson, Ed Ruscha, Elizabeth Peyton, David Byrne, Wayne Thiebaud, Tom Waits, Wim Wenders, Lou Reed, Guillermo del Toro, Mikhail Baryshnikov, PJ Harvey, Kara Walker, Beck, the fashion house Rodarte, Abbas Kiarostami, John Baldessari, Jason Schwartzman, Michael Stipe, and Agnès Varda. The designer is granted total creative autonomy, and most have never priorly designed for print. Thus the magazine’s staff must adapt the design and production processes with each issue to the respective artist’s capabilities and ambitions. Zoetrope: All-Story’s editor, Michael Ray, will present a number of editions from the back catalogue and discuss the experiences of collaborating with some of the greatest artists of our time in conceiving and realizing every release.
