From print, to digital, and beyond ...

Like so many “pre-millennial” designers, Mark Porter started out in print design, using hands-on techniques that are now seen as archaeological curiosities.

After more than 10 years of learning his craft and becoming one of the leading practitioners of editorial design, Mark found that a radical change was taking place. All the accumulated knowledge, skills and the industry itself, seemed to suddenly have become irrelevant. But that is not how it turned out…

Now Mark and his studio, Mark Porter Associates, are on a continual journey of discovery, exploring how editorial design can adapt and develop in a period of constant change.

At QVED Mark will look back at the years he spent art directing iconic magazines like Colors and Wired, tell some of the stories behind the pages, and share the lessons which have stayed with him ever since, as he has moved from magazines to newspapers, digital media, broadcast, and identity design.

In the current media world, every day brings new challenges, but also new opportunities. Designers must face up to the challenges, and grasp the opportunities by learning, adapting, and growing. But as the media landscape grows ever wider and more diffuse, the essentials of good design never change, and many of them become more important than ever.
