Editorial Design for Digital Platforms

Designers who are creating magazines and publications for screens big and small — and who isn’t these days? — have to consider a lot more than whether their art and layouts look great when they’re being built. “But how does it look on mobile?” and “But how fast will it load without wi-fi?” are common questions that smart editors, publishers, and the new generation of readers will pose — and these questions should be an intrinsic part of the editorial design process. The presentation will speak frankly to the uneasy tradeoffs between desktop and mobile. It will address the ascendancy of publishing and social-media platforms against individual publications’ homepages and brands. And it will highlight, through examples, the challenges and opportunities of designing digital-native publications — as opposed to the old model of translating layouts from print to the web.
